EYOF is an opportunity for North Macedonia to show it can organize a top-tier European event

Interview with Aleksandar Bogoevski, Executive Director of the European Youth Olympic Festival, which will take place from July 20 to 26 in Skopje and Kumanovo

How are the preparations for EYOF Skopje 2025 progressing and where are you currently in terms of executing the planned activities?

Preparations are progressing intensively, and we are now entering a phase where every day and every step is crucial. In the past period, we completed several important stages – technical inspections, coordination with national sports federations, and finalizing a large part of the logistical solutions. All venues have been mapped, the sports program is finalized, and we are in the process of wrapping up operational plans by sector. We are especially proud to have strengthened cross-sector collaboration – institutions, municipalities, and the private sector are all actively involved. We have a clear timeline until July and are working according to a detailed agenda that we follow and update daily.

Why is EYOF an important event for North Macedonia, and what does it mean for the country to host such a major sporting event?

EYOF Skopje 2025 is more than just a sporting event – it’s a platform through which a country positions itself before the European public. North Macedonia, as the smallest country to ever host the festival, has a unique opportunity to send a message about its maturity, capacity, and openness. This festival will bring more than 4,000 athletes, coaches, and delegations from 49 European countries who will live, train, and compete here. It’s a true cultural and sporting symbiosis. Additionally, EYOF will have a long-term impact – it will leave behind new sports facilities, a motivated youth population, a volunteer network, and a strengthened sense of confidence in all of us as a society.

Part of the preparations included the recently held Chefs de Mission seminar. How did it go, and what were the impressions of the European delegations who visited Skopje?

The Chefs de Mission seminar is a standard practice before every EYOF, where representatives of national Olympic committees meet to get familiar with the host cities and logistical details. For many of them, it was their first official contact with North Macedonia. The feedback we received

was truly encouraging – they were impressed by the organization, the openness and professionalism of our team, and the energy we radiate. Many of them were visiting for the first time and honestly admitted they didn’t expect such a high level of preparedness. This gave us additional motivation and confidence, and confirmed that Europe is truly watching and following us – which means we cannot afford anything less than perfection.

On April 12, the “100 Days to EYOF” event was held behind East Gate Mall. How would you evaluate the event and its impact on the public?

The “100 Days to EYOF” event was the first major public signal that the festival is approaching. From the concept to the final moment – everything was aimed at engaging citizens, especially the youth. We had 3×3 basketball tournaments, fun activities, presentations of Olympic values, as well as meetings with future volunteers and athletes. It was an event where sports and fun merged with genuine civic energy. Our goal was for the public to feel the festival as their own, and the response showed us that this goal was achieved. People are beginning to identify with EYOF – as a project that presents our country and nation in the right light.

What are the next steps leading up to the start of the festival in July, and what can the public expect from the event itself?

The next three months are critical. We will conduct simulation exercises, finalize mobile teams, hold additional training for volunteers, and continue with communication activities. In parallel, we will organize extra training for our volunteers, who are one of the most important elements of the entire process. Additionally, we’ll continue our outreach efforts to the public and media so that the festival is recognized by all citizens.

As for the sports program, EYOF Skopje 2025 will include 15 sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, 3×3 basketball, canoe slalom, cycling, handball, judo, swimming, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, mountain biking, and gymnastics. During the festival, Skopje will host most of the competitions, while Kumanovo will welcome the cyclists and basketball players. The unique sports atmosphere will be enhanced by the gymnastics competitions held in Osijek, creating a true Olympic vibe across different locations.

We expect over 4,000 participants, including young athletes from 49 European countries, their coaches and official delegations, as well as a large domestic audience. Along with all the additional activities – cultural programs, educational panels, and interactions among youth from across Europe – this will be a celebration of sports, youth, diversity, and European values. The public will have open access to many of the competitions, and the atmosphere will be truly Olympic – full of energy, color, positive emotions, and new friendships.

What is your personal vision – what do you hope EYOF Skopje 2025 will leave behind?

My personal wish is for EYOF to leave a lasting mark. First and foremost, to prove to our fellow citizens – and to the world – that North Macedonia can organize a complex, European, Olympic-level sports festival. I hope younger generations will remember EYOF as the moment they were inspired to take up sports, engage with the community, become volunteers, or follow their dreams.

It’s also important to me what we leave behind – new or renovated sports facilities that will serve future generations, trained staff, established processes, and knowledge that can be transferred to other projects. But above all, I want to build a sense of unity and pride among every citizen – that we were part of something big, European, and truly valuable. That will be the real success. EYOF is more than a festival – it is a turning point, a chance to show a new face, a new spirit, and a new energy of Macedonia. That’s the vision that drives me every day.

Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the organizational aspects, sports venues, and logistical capacities, as well as the host cities of the largest sporting event in the history of North Macedonia. The Chefs de Mission seminar is one of the key milestones in the preparations for the festival, enabling the presentation of all aspects of the organization and the exchange of experiences with the delegations participating in EYOF Skopje 2025. For Skopje and Kumanovo, as host cities, this is a unique opportunity to demonstrate their readiness for such a large-scale sports event and to prove that North Macedonia can be part of the European and global sports map.

Before the official start of the seminar, speeches were delivered by Borko Ristovski – Minister of Sports, Daniel Dimevski – President of the Olympic Committee of North Macedonia and Liney Halldorsdottir – Chair of the EYOF Commission of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), who all emphasized the importance of the festival for youth sports and the international promotion of North Macedonia.

Interview with Filip Despotovski, Sports Coordinator for EYOF Skopje 2025

EYOF Skopje 2025 is an opportunity to showcase that North Macedonia is ready for world-class sporting events

What are the most important aspects of your role as a Sports Coordinator, and how are you
preparing for a major sports event like EYOF Skopje 2025?

As the Sports Coordinator, my task is to ensure that all sports activities during the festival are organized according to the highest standards. As we approach the festival, which will take place at the end of July this year, the level of engagement is increasing, but so is the motivation. This involves close collaboration with all sports federations in North Macedonia, organizing the competitions, coordinating the venues, and providing technical support. We are preparing detailed operational plans for each sport, adhering to the regulations of international sports federations. Additionally, we maintain ongoing communication with foreign delegations to understand their needs and expectations. This role is not just about organization; it is also an opportunity to build networks and represent North Macedonia as a serious and professional host for international sports events.

You work with all sports federations in the country. How would you assess the level of collaboration, and what is being done to ensure the success of the festival?

Collaboration with the sports federations is crucial, and I must emphasize that we have witnessed tremendous dedication and enthusiasm from their side so far. However, this collaboration is a complex process since each federation has its own specifics and requirements. We maintain regular communication through meetings, training sessions, and joint analyses. Our goal is to provide them with the support and resources needed to prepare their respective sports in the best way possible. Additionally, we strive to strengthen internal coordination among the federations, which will be vital for the future development of Macedonian sports.

What are your expectations for the participants and athletes taking part in EYOF 2025? How
will this experience help young talents?

We expect the participants to feel the magic of sports and the Olympic spirit. For many, this will be their first experience at such a significant international event, which will be a pivotal moment in their careers. The festival will give them the opportunity to compete with top athletes from across Europe, gain new experiences, and build connections that can support their future development. Additionally, for Macedonian athletes, this is a chance to compete on home ground in front of their own audience, which is a unique feeling that can inspire them to deliver their best performances.

What challenges do you face in preparing the infrastructure and sports facilities?

Infrastructure is one of the biggest challenges for such an event, as we need to ensure that all venues meet international standards. Some facilities require renovation, while others need to be adapted for the specific needs of the sports. We are working with teams of engineers, architects, and sports experts to complete everything on time and with high quality. Additionally, we are focusing on logistical aspects such as accessibility for athletes and spectators, transportation, and all other details that contribute to the overall experience of the event.

How will this event impact the future development of sports in North Macedonia?

Our sports system faces numerous daily challenges, but EYOF 2025 has the potential to transform Macedonian sports. EYOF is significant for elevating the profile of all sports featured at the festival, introducing young athletes to the Olympic stage, and advancing collaboration between federations and the Olympic Committee. I hope we will prove ourselves as excellent organizers, sports professionals, and athletes, earning recognition for the future. Beyond improving infrastructure, the festival will inspire young people to engage in sports and demonstrate that sports can be a serious profession. Moreover, the partnerships with international federations and the networks we establish will open new opportunities for Macedonian athletes and coaches. Public and institutional support for sports projects will also increase, laying the foundation for further development.

What message would you send to young people participating as athletes or volunteers?

Be proud to be part of this historic chapter for North Macedonia. For athletes, this is an opportunity to showcase your talent and create memories that will inspire you for a lifetime. For volunteers, this is a chance to learn new skills, gain international experience, and become part of a team that makes a difference. The commitment and dedication invested today will open doors for the future. This is an event created by all of us together, and the result will be a source of pride for the entire country.

Interview with Sara Glogovac, Volunteer Sector Manager for EYOF Skopje 2025

Volunteers are the Heart of the European Youth Olympic Festival 2025

The European Youth Olympic Festival 2025 represents a unique opportunity for North Macedonia. How do you perceive the importance of such events in promoting healthy habits and good values?

Events like the European Youth Olympic Festival 2025 are more than just sporting competitions; they have the power to leave a profound impact on society, especially on young people. They serve as platforms to inspire and motivate youth, not just in sports but in life as well. Through sports, young people learn about teamwork, dedication, discipline, and respect—values that are essential for everyday life. The festival promotes an active lifestyle, inspires young people to adopt healthy habits, and demonstrates that sports are more than physical activity—they are a tool for personal transformation.

Furthermore, the event acts as a bridge between different cultures and nations. Young participants will not only compete but also have the chance to socialize, learn from each other, and form lifelong friendships. The festival is an excellent example of how sports can foster unity and mutual understanding.

Last month, the call for volunteers, a significant part of the festival’s organization, was opened. Why is it important for young people to get involved as volunteers in such events?

Volunteering at EYOF 2025 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience with long-term benefits. Being a volunteer in an organization of this scale means being part of something bigger, something that leaves a mark on society. Volunteers have the chance to contribute to sports, gain new skills, meet people from different cultures, and create a network of connections. Volunteering is not just about contributing to the success of the festival; it is also an opportunity for personal growth. It is an invaluable experience that helps build individuals not just as people but also as future leaders in their communities.

Additionally, volunteers will witness how such an event brings communities together, draws attention to sports and culture, and creates positive societal changes. This experience will teach young people the value of collaboration and the importance of individual contributions to the greater good. They will be part of a story remembered as one of the biggest sporting events in our country.

What opportunities will volunteers have, and what will their contribution to the festival be?

Volunteers will play a crucial role in all aspects of the festival, from organization and logistics to supporting sporting and cultural activities. Their contribution will be the foundation of the festival’s success. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to work with professionals, learn about organizational processes, and witness the societal impact of such an event. Through their enthusiasm and dedication, volunteers will help create a welcoming and professional atmosphere for athletes, coaches, and visitors. This is their chance to make a difference and show that young people are the key to positive societal changes. EYOF 2025 will give them the opportunity to be part of something significant, inspiring them to continue contributing to sports, culture, and society.

What would you say to young people who are hesitant about applying to be volunteers?

I would tell them not to hesitate and apply immediately! Being a volunteer at EYOF 2025 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This is more than just volunteering—it’s a chance to be part of history, to leave your mark, and to make a difference.

Young people often look for ways to get involved and make a change in society, and this is precisely that kind of opportunity. Through volunteering, they will witness the true power of teamwork and feel pride in contributing to one of the largest sporting events in Europe. Not only will it enrich their experience, but it will also help them realize that every change starts with them.

How will EYOF 2025 change young people’s perspectives on involvement in community
activities?

EYOF 2025 is an excellent example of how an event can ignite a sense of responsibility and active engagement among young people. Through their participation, they will understand that societal change depends on their initiative and dedication. They will recognize that their efforts can contribute to the success of an event that not only promotes North Macedonia but also brings positive changes to the community. The experience gained at EYOF will motivate them to participate in other initiatives, acknowledge the importance of their individual contributions, and become leaders in their communities. Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity for young people to understand that every change begins with an idea and action. EYOF 2025 embodies that—it’s an inspiration for change that starts with the youth.

Meet Shiny, the Official Mascot for the European Youth Olympic Festival 2025!

The Olympic Committee of North Macedonia is thrilled to announce that “Shiny” has been selected as the official mascot of the 18th European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) 2025, following a public vote. This exciting event will take place from July 19 to 26, 2025, in Skopje, welcoming young athletes from across Europe and celebrating youth sports, unity, and excellence. Shiny will serve as the vibrant symbol of EYOF 2025, representing the festival’s core values and embodying the spirit of youth and sportsmanship.

The selection process for the EYOF 2025 mascot was open to the public, with the Olympic Committee of North Macedonia inviting citizens of all ages to vote for the symbol that would best represent the spirit of the festival. Through this initiative, the people of North Macedonia had a unique opportunity to choose the mascot that would inspire future generations of athletes and symbolize the nation’s commitment to youth sports. From a selection of three compelling candidates – Pero, Tome, and Shiny – the people chose Shiny, a mascot that stands out for its symbolism, warmth, and connection to North Macedonian values.

Meet the Mascot Candidates: Pero, Tome and Shiny

Each mascot candidate carried unique symbolism, representing different aspects of North Macedonian culture, vibrancy, and the values of youth sports:

· Pero – the Pepper: Named after one of North Macedonia’s most cherished culinary icons, the red pepper, Pero symbolised energy, spice, and zest for life. Pero was envisioned to represent the fiery determination that young athletes bring to their sports, reflecting the energy and resilience needed to achieve great things.

· Tome – the Tomato: Inspired by another North Macedonian staple, the tomato, Tome embodied growth, strength, and the nourishment that sport brings to one’s character. Tome represented the concept of “growth through sport” and was intended as a symbol of resilience, endurance, and the rich traditions of Macedonian culture.

· Shiny – the Sun: Now the official mascot of EYOF 2025, Shiny was inspired by the sun symbol on the North Macedonian flag. Representing warmth, unity, and the spirit of friendship, Shiny symbolises the shared bonds formed through sports. As a bright and welcoming figure, Shiny is perfectly suited to represent EYOF’s core values of friendship, respect, and sportsmanship, and will serve as a beacon of optimism and joy throughout the festival.

Shiny will be an integral part of every EYOF 2025 event, from promotional activities to opening and closing ceremonies. He will engage with young audiences, cheering on athletes and creating lasting memories for attendees. His presence will also extend to digital platforms, where fans can interact, participate in fun challenges, and follow his adventures throughout the festival.

Shiny embodies the shared vision of EYOF 2025 – a festival that not only celebrates youth sports but also builds a foundation of mutual respect, cooperation, and friendship. He represents a future where young athletes can compete with passion, forge lifelong connections, and inspire others.
